Fishing - Fresh & Sea Water
If you love Fishing….then you will Love Kerry
The County of Kerry is Ireland’s 5th largest county but has more coast line that any other County. With such an abundance of water and lakes there really no finer place in Ireland to take a
fishing break
.
As an indication of what Kerry has to offer the curious fisherman the following areas have gained national & international acclaim:
The River Laune
– Located in the South West of Kerry in the town of Killorglin is a haven of Salmon fishing. The Laune also drains the Lakes of Killarney with is renowned for its brown trout.
Cloghane & Brandon
– located in along the northern side of the Dingle Peninsula under the shadow of Mount Brandon offers a huge variety of fish including Cod, Pollock, ling, various spices of dogfish, mackerel, turbot, bass and even shark! This community also boasts an abundant supply of bait, fish lures and tackle shops. Some tips from the locals:
Bass are more abundant in the Winter Season spend some time at Owenmore river, a great spot for Salmon & Sea trout. Fly anglers can be seen after dark as sea trout fishing is best under the night sky.
Ballingskelligs
– located some 50 miles southwest of Killarney on the stunning Ring of Kerry is a region blessed with an array of lakes and rivers, that when combined with sea fishing proves to be the ‘complete’ destination for any fishing/angling enthusiast.
Killarney
– consisting of 3 lakes and many rivers & streams the Valley of Killarney is a beauty to behold for the fishing traveler. Gearhmeen, the valleys main river rises in the McGullicuddy’s Reeks flowing into the upper lake which is 1.5 miles long and 1 mile wide. From early spring Salmon being to populate the Lake. The lakes are also a good base for those wet fly & brown trout fishing. Boats on the Lakes are licensed for both salmon & trout angling.
River Feale
– boasting some 100 miles of fishing water rises in the mountains of North Cork before meandering through the towns of Abbeyfeale and Listowel entering the sea just south of Ballybunion. This river passes through some of the most fertile valleys in the county and it is no wonder that her salmon and sea trout fisheries are among the finest in Ireland. The Feale herself is a fast flowing spate river with large deep fish-holding pools prevalent in the lower areas. It is argued that the upper tributaries and deep holding pools give this river her fishing magic. In a good season this river will produce at a minimum 1,500 salmon and grilse with over 2,000 sea trout.
River Blackwater
– Regarded as one of Ireland’s premier Salmon, Brown Trout & White Sea Trout ‘homes’, the Blackwater River runs some 10 miles from source before ending the journey at Kenmare Bay. All types of angling can be done on this river, fly-fishing, spinning and worming are also very popular on this river.
